Alboin began as a youthful prince of the Lombards who first proved his mettle in the decisive battle that shattered the power of the Gepidae. He emerged as a heroic warrior-king whose matchless strength and intrepidity became legendary, feasting with his companions and drinking from the skull cup of his defeated rival Cunimund. His reign ended tragically when he was murdered in his palace at Verona by those closest to him.
