Ali began as the noble youth who slept in Muhammad's bed to deceive assassins, demonstrating both courage and religious devotion from an early age. He became known as the Lion of God for his battlefield prowess, most famously cleaving a gigantic Hebrew champion to the chest with his cimeter. His claims to the caliphate and his marriage to Fatima made him central to the succession disputes that would define early Islamic history, ending with his assassination after receiving fifty honorable wounds in battle.
