Anthemius rose from Praetorian prefect to become Western Roman Emperor through his superior abilities and imperial connections. As grandson of the praefect Anthemius and son-in-law of Marcian, he received the Dalmatian fleet into the harbors of Italy but proved incapable of protecting his subjects beyond the Alps. His reign was clouded by misfortune and discord, ultimately ending when he was dragged from concealment and massacred by command of his son-in-law Ricimer.
