Antony of Egypt began as an illiterate youth from the lower regions of Thebais who distributed his inheritance and retreated to the desert. Through decades of monastic discipline, he became the founder of Christian monasticism, living to the age of one hundred and five in his mountain monastery near the Red Sea.
Description
Antony of Egypt appears as an elderly monk whose body shows the effects of a century of desert life. His simple robes and weathered features reflect both his humble origins and his spiritual authority among the early Christian communities.
