The History of the Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire · Character
Arinthaeus
Also known as General Arinthaeus

There is a quiet authority in the way he carries himself, as though the weight of command has settled into his bones. His eyes, the color of old bronze, seem to measure every man and horse before him. When he speaks, his voice carries the calm certainty of one who has led charges and survived them.

Arinthaeus served as a trusted cavalry commander under Constantius, leading the left flank at critical engagements and later tasked with gathering the remnants of the imperial court during the turbulent succession. His final recorded duty saw him dispatched alongside Sallust to negotiate peace with Persian satraps, representing Roman interests at the frontier. Though history records little of his personal life, his repeated selection for sensitive military and diplomatic missions speaks to a reputation for steady competence and loyalty to the throne.
Description
Arinthaeus possesses the solid, upright build of a lifelong cavalry officer, with broad shoulders and a compact frame suited to the saddle. His skin is weathered to a deep olive tone by years of sun and wind. Short, iron-gray hair frames a square face marked by heavy brows and deep-set brown eyes. A neatly trimmed beard covers his jaw. He wears the gilded cuirass and crimson cloak of a Roman general, with cavalry command insignia visible on his shoulder clasp. A cavalry sword rests at his hip, and leather pteruges sway beneath his breastplate with each stride.
