Basilius was a Roman senator of Spanish extraction who served as ambassador to negotiate with Alaric during the Gothic siege. As praefect, he played a crucial role in maintaining order during the papal succession crisis, and his decree regarding clerical property rights was designed to benefit the Roman people. He holds the distinction of being the last consul whose name marks the end of the annual consulship tradition.
