Brancaleone degli Andalo arrived from Bologna as a foreign magistrate determined to impose peace upon Rome's warring factions. His first act of governance was the systematic demolition of one hundred and forty noble towers that had become fortresses of aristocratic violence. After his death, his head was preserved in a precious vase atop a marble column—a grim monument to his uncompromising pursuit of justice.
