Constans I was the third son of Constantine, representing his father's legacy in Italy, Western Illyricum, and Africa. At seventeen, he was acknowledged as the lawful sovereign of these western territories. Though he indulged in hunting and private pleasures, he professed orthodox faith and wrote threatening epistles to his brother. His life ended tragically when he was murdered while pursuing hunting or private pleasures in a forest near Helena at the foot of the Pyrenees.
