Publius Herennius Dexippus emerged as both historian and defender when Gothic forces threatened Athens, collecting a hasty band of volunteers from peasants and soldiers alike. Working alongside the engineer Cleodamus, he helped organize the defense and even attacked the Gothic fleet in the harbor of Piraeus. Through his actions, he avenged in some measure the calamities that had befallen his adopted city.
