Gainas began as a Gothic suppliant and fugitive who crossed the Danube seeking Roman protection, eventually rising to become master-general of the Eastern Roman armies. His journey took him from trusted ally of Stilicho to Gothic general guarding Thrace and the Hellespont, before his alliance with Tribigild led to rebellion and eventual defeat.
