George Muzalon rose to become great domestic, guardian of the young emperor John IV, and a central figure in Byzantine politics. Despite public hatred and the dangers of his position, he maintained his authority until his massacre at the altar alongside his brothers. His firm assertion of Greek orthodoxy and his marriage connections to Serbian royalty marked him as a significant political figure of his time.
