George Phranza, born the year before the battle of Angora, served as protovestiarite and first chamberlain to the last Byzantine emperors. His diplomatic career took him as ambassador to the court of Amurath II and to Adrianople, where he negotiated with elaborate retinues that included nobles, guards, physicians, and monks. As historian and principal secretary, he witnessed the final decline of Byzantine power, recording how national defense had been reduced to a mere four thousand nine hundred and seventy Romans.
Description
A Byzantine historian and diplomat whose court position as protovestiarite is reflected in his distinguished bearing and elaborate diplomatic attire. His presence combines the scholarly attention to detail with the measured diplomacy of one who has represented emperors across years of negotiation and witnessed the twilight of empire.
