Pope Gregory XI made the momentous decision to return the papal seat from Avignon to Rome, ending the seventy-year period known as the Babylonian Captivity of the Papacy. Though he died shortly after this historic return, his action restored the papacy to its traditional seat and set the stage for the turbulent period that would follow, including the Western Schism.

Description

A middle-aged man with Mediterranean features and olive skin, his dark hair partially visible beneath the papal tiara. He wears the traditional white and gold papal vestments with quiet dignity, carrying the papal staff as a symbol of his office. His bearing reflects both the authority of his position and the gravity of decisions that affect the entire Christian world.
