There is an air of measured authority about him, the kind that belongs to a man whose word moves armies and whose gifts cross empires. His presence suggests both the scholar and the sovereign.

Harun al-Rashid ruled as Abbasid Caliph during the late eighth and early ninth centuries, his dominion stretching from Africa to India. He exchanged diplomatic gifts with Charlemagne, including a tent, water-clock, elephant, and the keys of the Holy Sepulchre. He led armies of 95,000 Persians and Arabs, performed nine pilgrimages to Mecca, and conducted eight invasions of Roman territories. Esteemed by Charlemagne as a Christian brother, he remains one of the greatest of the Abbasides.
Description
Harun al-Rashid is depicted as a middle-aged man of olive complexion, dark hair and beard, his build neither slight nor heavy. He wears the flowing robes and turban of an Abbasid Caliph, his bearing calm and commanding, marked by the dignity of one who rules from Africa to India.
