Henry Dandolo served as Doge of Venice during one of the republic's most consequential periods, leading the Venetian forces as an elderly statesman whose blindness did not diminish his strategic acumen or resolve. Despite his advanced age and loss of sight, he retained the sound understanding and manly courage that defined his leadership, eventually declining the imperial throne while accepting the title of Despot of Romania. He died in the fullness of years and glory, having guided Venice through its most ambitious military undertaking.
