Hilarion of Gaza began as a Syrian youth who chose a life of extreme penance, fixing his abode on a desolate stretch of sand between the sea and a marsh near Gaza. For forty-eight years he maintained his austere discipline, inspiring thousands of anachorets who followed him across Palestine. His influence spread from Paraetonium to Cape Pachynus, and his voyages between Alexandria and Marseilles carried his reputation across the Mediterranean.
Description
A lean, sun-darkened man whose years of penance have weathered his frame, dressed in simple rough robes. His presence is intense and ascetic, marked by the quiet power of one who has lived long in solitude and spiritual discipline.
