Hilderic succeeded to the throne of Africa as the gentle son of the savage Hunneric, choosing the duties of humanity and justice over the obligations of an impious oath. His reign was marked by the restoration of peace and universal freedom, including the return of Catholic bishops to their sees. Despite his mild disposition, he was eventually usurped by Gelimer and met his end in infirm old age.
