Ignatius served as Bishop of Antioch during the early Christian persecutions. His letters exalted the dignity of the episcopal office, and he was eventually sent in chains to Rome as a public spectacle. Even facing martyrdom, he received news that the persecution in Antioch had ended with characteristic grace.
Description
An elderly bishop with weathered Middle Eastern features and a graying beard. He wears simple ecclesiastical robes appropriate to his station, and his expression combines gentleness with resolute faith. The chains he bears mark him as one destined for martyrdom in Rome.
