Justin I rose from peasant origins in Dardania to become Eastern Roman Emperor at the age of sixty-eight, having worked his way up through the military ranks to command the palace guards. Though illiterate, he proved capable enough to adopt his nephew Justinian as heir and establish the dynasty that would reach its height under his successor. His reign marked the transition from the age of Justinian's predecessors to the era of Justinian himself.
Description
An elderly man whose weathered face and strong, work-worn hands betray his peasant origins, though his military bearing speaks of decades spent in command. His thinning gray hair and the slight limp from a wounded thigh mark his advanced years, while his simple but authoritative clothing reflects a man more accustomed to the camp than the court. His eyes carry the practical intelligence of one who rose through merit rather than education.
