Kaloyan began as a revolted chief of the Bulgarians and Walachians who drew the Comans from the Scythian wilderness to form military alliances. He sent an embassy to Innocent III, acknowledging himself as a genuine son of Rome in both descent and religion, and received license to coin money along with a royal title and Latin archbishop. His reign ended when he was stabbed in the night in his tent, found weltering in his blood, with the blow ascribed to the lance of St. Demetrius.
Description
Kaloyan has the appearance of a subtle barbarian king with royal authority, bearing both diplomatic skill and savage demeanor. His presence suggests a military conqueror who commands alliances with the Comans and holds royal title while navigating complex political relationships.
