There's something almost comical about this bulky figure whose impressive physical presence seems to promise more than his uncertain gaze delivers—a man promoted beyond his natural abilities, carrying the weight of command with visible discomfort.

Leo I, surnamed 'the Ajax of the East' for his bulk and perceived dullness, rose from his origins as a woolcomber and kitchen slave to become a favorite general of Eutropius and eventually Emperor of the East. His military career was marked by uncertain operations and a tendency to neglect favorable opportunities, yet his imposing physical presence and connections secured his advancement despite his limitations.

Description

An adult man of considerable bulk and imposing physical presence, with the thick-set build that earned him the nickname 'Ajax of the East.' His short hair and somewhat dull expression suggest a man more comfortable with simple tasks than complex strategy. Despite his kitchen-slave origins, he wears the armor and insignia of high military command, though his bearing suggests these honors sit uneasily upon him.
