Liutprand, king of the Lombards, combined religious fervor with military ambition, at one moment listening to Pope Gregory II at the gates of the Vatican and withdrawing his troops, at another threatening Rome itself. His reign marked the complex relationship between the Lombard kingdom and the papacy in the turbulent eighth century.
Description
Liutprand possesses the stern and martial bearing of a Lombard king, with dark hair and beard framing a face hardened by rule. His powerful build speaks of a warrior-ruler, his rich garments fastened by a heavy brooch, his presence marked by the authority of one who commands both battlefield and throne room.
