Marcus Aurelius began his reign as a mild philosopher-emperor whose excellent understanding was matched by rigid Stoic discipline and an unsuspecting goodness of heart. From age twelve, he embraced the severe and laborious virtue of the Stoics, becoming known for his justice and beneficence to all mankind. His memory was so revered that more than a century after his death, many Romans still preserved his image among their household gods.

Description

A mature Roman emperor whose face bears the distinctive marks of philosophical contemplation beneath imperial authority. He wears the purple robes of his office with simple dignity, his short-cropped hair and beard reflecting Roman aristocratic fashion while his expression conveys both the weight of empire and the serenity of Stoic discipline.
