There's something austere and controlled about this emperor's presence, his cold reserve masking deeper currents of benevolence. His bearing suggests both the weight of imperial responsibility and the physical toll of long rule, marked by the dignity of one who has learned to dissemble pride.

Maurice, also known as Maurice Tiberius, began as the chosen successor to Emperor Tiberius II, selected despite his mature age of forty-three. Of ancient Roman origin but with Cappadocian parents, he reigned for over twenty years, displaying calculated benevolence while adopting Chosroes II as his spiritual son. Despite suffering from sciatic pains that forced him to walk barefoot in religious processions, he maintained the dignity of his office until his murder alongside five of his nine children by the usurper Phocas.
