Michael II, known as the Stammerer, rose from humble Phrygian origins to claim the Byzantine throne despite his speech impediment. His character was shaped by the heresies of his birthplace, yet he attempted to mediate between the religious factions that threatened to tear the empire apart. His moderation, born partly of timidity, defined his approach to the theological conflicts of his age.

Description

A middle-aged man whose speech defect is evident in his careful manner of expression. His features reflect his Phrygian heritage, with dark hair and a face marked by the ignoble vices of his early life. He wears the imperial regalia with subtle Phrygian influences, his expression suggesting the calculated moderation of one who learned to survive through careful navigation of dangerous political waters.
