Pachomius, the Egyptian abbot, transformed the spiritual landscape of Upper Thebais by founding the monastery at Tabenne and subsequently establishing nine monasteries for men and one for women. His angelic rule of discipline attracted such devotion that Easter festivals sometimes gathered fifty thousand religious persons under his spiritual authority. His monastic foundations represented a new model of organized Christian asceticism that would influence monastic development throughout the Christian world.
Description
An Egyptian holy abbot with the ascetic bearing of a desert father, wearing simple monastic robes that reflect his dedication to spiritual discipline. His presence carries the dignified authority of one who founded fourteen hundred brethren at Tabenne and whose rule attracted fifty thousand followers to his Easter celebrations.
