Peter of Courtenay began as a French prince of royal birth, his reputation fair and his possessions ample. When the call came for crusade against the Albigeois, his zeal and valor drove him to sell or mortgage his patrimony, assembling 140 knights and 5500 sergeants and archers to pass the Alps. His journey ended abruptly when he was arrested during a banquet, his crusading ambitions cut short before they could fully unfold.
