Peter the Hermit began as an unlikely figure—a small, barefoot preacher whose contemptible appearance masked an extraordinary gift for oratory. His passionate speeches and the sight of him riding his sanctified ass while bearing a weighty crucifix inspired thousands to join the First Crusade. He fell during the siege of Antioch and later served as an embassy to Kerboga, becoming both inspiration and cautionary example for future crusading preachers like Bernard.

Description

A small-statured, emaciated middle-aged man whose contemptible appearance contrasts sharply with his fierce presence. His keen and lively eyes dominate his face, head bare and feet naked, his meagre body wrapped in a coarse garment. He carries a weighty crucifix and rides a sanctified ass, his animated expression revealing the vehemence of his speech.
