Pope Eugenius IV was driven from Rome by popular unrest and forced to flee the city in the humble disguise of a monk's habit. His nephew's imprisonment marked the beginning of his troubles, and his escape down the Tiber became a symbol of the precarious position of papal authority during this turbulent period.
Description
A middle-aged man of dignified bearing, dressed in the white cassock and red mozzetta of papal office, with a white zucchetto covering his head. His face is clean-shaven with strong, defined features and dark, serious eyes. He carries himself with the natural authority of his position, though his expression suggests the weight of his responsibilities.
