Pope Innocent II, born Gregorio Papareschi, faced immediate challenges to his legitimacy when Anacletus II was elected in opposition. With support from St. Bernard of Clairvaux, he eventually prevailed. His papacy was marked by conflict with Roger II of Sicily, whom he later reconciled with, and he condemned Arnold of Brescia at the Lateran Council while navigating the turbulent politics of Rome.

A middle-aged man with graying dark hair and refined features that reflect both scholarship and authority. He wears the papal vestments of white and gold, with the appropriate papal insignia. His bearing is dignified and measured, suggesting one who has learned to navigate the complex intersection of spiritual authority and political necessity.
