Ptolemy began as an Alexandrian scholar whose geographical work became essential reference material for understanding the locations of various peoples and settlements. His Geography documented the positions of Gothic and other barbarian tribes, while his astronomical work was later translated by Boethius for Latin readers. Though he held positions of authority, including as a king who proved unable to prevent mob violence, his lasting legacy remained in his scholarly contributions to geography and astronomy.
