Raymond IV of Toulouse began as one of the most powerful nobles in southern France, holding the titles of Count of Toulouse, Duke of Narbonne, and Marquis of Provence. A veteran warrior who had fought the Saracens in Spain, he became a leading figure in the First Crusade, though his haughty and obstinate nature often created friction with other leaders. Despite his initial reluctance to acknowledge royal authority, he committed himself fully to the crusading cause, participating in the sieges of Nice and Jerusalem.
Description
An elderly nobleman of commanding presence, with the weathered features of a veteran warrior who has campaigned in Spain, dressed in the rich but practical clothing befitting his multiple titles—Count of Toulouse, Duke of Narbonne, Marquis of Provence—carrying himself with the haughty bearing of established nobility tempered by the obstinacy of long experience.
