Sigismond, King of Hungary and son of emperors of the West, led Christian forces against the Ottoman advance at Nicopolis with the determination to conquer or perish in the attempt. His horse pierced by enemy javelins, he fell among the spears of the Turkish infantry, his severed head later displayed as a grim trophy to his defeated troops. Earlier in his career, he had entered Rome as a conquering king of Naples.
