Stephen Colonna the Elder stood as the patriarch of one of Rome's most powerful noble families, father to six brothers who would all meet violent ends. Praised by Petrarch as a hero of the old Roman order, he witnessed the destruction of his entire family line before dying from grief, marking the end of an era in Roman baronial power.
