Sylverius served as Pope during the Byzantine reconquest of Italy under Belisarius. Summoned to the Pincian palace, he was accused of treason, stripped of his pontifical ornaments, and forced to exchange them for the mean habit of a monk before being exiled to the East. His transformation from the heights of papal authority to monastic exile reflects the dangerous intersection of religious and political power in 6th-century Rome.
Description
Sylverius initially appears in the full splendor of papal regalia, wearing the elaborate pontifical ornaments that mark his office as successor of St. Peter. His features would reflect both the dignity of his position and the gravity of his responsibilities. Later, stripped of these vestments, he appears in the simple dark habit of a monk, his transformation visible in both clothing and demeanor.
