Theobald III, Count of Champagne, was a young noble whose brief life was defined by his leadership in the Fourth Crusade preparations. Encouraged by his family's martial tradition, he commanded the loyalty of two thousand two hundred knights and was recognized among the foremost nobles of Champagne. His health declined before the crusade could begin, and he died on a bed of sickness rather than in battle.
