Theodorus served as both brother and military commander to Emperor Heraclius during the desperate years when the Roman Empire faced simultaneous threats from the Persians under Chosroes and the Avars. His anxiety for Constantinople was relieved by its deliverance, and his hopes were confirmed by his own victory in battle. Through his brother's strategic alliance with the Turks, Theodorus helped to counter the hostile league that threatened the very survival of the Roman state.

Description

Theodorus presents the figure of a 7th-century Byzantine military commander, with olive skin and dark hair that mark his Eastern Roman heritage. His build suggests both the physical conditioning required of a military officer and the dignified bearing appropriate to his status as brother of the emperor. He wears the armor and insignia of imperial military service, carrying sword and regalia that speak to both his rank and his responsibilities. His demeanor reflects the disciplined competence of one who has risen through the ranks of Byzantine military hierarchy.
