Vigilius began as an interpreter whose discretion earned him the trust of powerful men, only to be drawn into the dangerous currents of papal politics. Elected pope after solemn invocation of the Holy Ghost, he purchased the papal throne through a bribe of two hundred pounds of gold, marking his rise through simony. His tenure was marked by cowardice and compromise, ending in starvation or murder on a desolate island after being torn from the Roman church he had claimed to serve.
Description
A middle-aged man of stocky build with thinning dark hair and a face that betrays both ambition and constant anxiety. His eyes move restlessly, suggesting someone perpetually calculating advantage. He wears ornate papal vestments of rich fabric with gold embroidery and a heavy pectoral cross, carrying himself with the nervous authority of a man who knows the price of his position.
