Vitalian emerged as a Gothic chief who waged civil war against Anastasius in defense of the orthodox faith, commanding an army of Huns and Bulgarians as he challenged imperial authority. His military successes earned him the consulship and generalship, marking him as both champion of Catholic doctrine and dangerous rival to established power. His rise ended abruptly when he was stabbed with seventeen wounds at a royal banquet, his death marking the violent resolution of a conflict that had threatened the stability of the Eastern Empire.
Description
A powerfully built Gothic chief with the commanding presence of a man who leads through both warfare and political maneuvering. His long hair and well-groomed beard mark him as Gothic nobility, while his practical but fine clothing suggests someone equally comfortable in council chambers and on the battlefield. His bearing carries the weight of a man who has earned both the loyalty of soldiers and the dangerous attention of rivals.
