Zosimus, Count and Ex-advocate of the Treasury, wrote extensively about the division of power among the Praetorian prefects and military reforms under Constantine. His historical accounts, privately circulated, were marked by partial and indecent bigotry against Christian princes, including even the father of his sovereign, his attacks on Constantine possibly influenced by passion and prejudice from his pagan perspective.

He carries writing materials, scrolls, and historical documents, wearing period Byzantine clothing appropriate to his former position as Ex-advocate of the Treasury, his expression suggesting the critical nature of his historical perspective.
