Vandal Sack of Rome
In 455 CE, Genseric's Vandals sailed from Carthage and sacked Rome for fourteen days, carrying off vast treasures including the spoils of Jerusalem and the empress Eudoxia.
Outcome
The sack demonstrated the empire's inability to defend its capital and gave rise to the term 'vandalism' for wanton destruction.
