Also known as Holy Cedars, Cedars of Mount Libanus
- item
Ancient cedar trees on Mount Lebanon (Libanus), famous in Scripture, standing erect under snow weight. The trees were reduced from twenty large specimens to four or five by the 18th century. They were protected by excommunication, with wood used sparingly for small crosses, and an annual mass was celebrated under their shade. The Maronites attributed to them a sensitive power to erect branches and repel snow.
