Challice D’Arle first exists in Crokus’s imagination as the beautiful high-born maiden he hopes to meet, then appears in the intimate reality of a young woman roused in her bed. Her softness and laughter make her seem far removed from the dangers gathering around Darujhistan. Later, she is associated with the court’s favor and with a painful disappointment for Crokus, whose idealized vision of her cannot withstand what he learns.
Description
Challice has a soft, round, pale face and wide eyes that give her an open, youthful look. Her hair is braided, lending a neat, composed frame to her features. When seen in bed, she clutches blankets high around her neck, her bare shoulders and startled smile softened by the lamplight. Her presence feels gentle and sheltered, more intimate than grand despite her high-born standing.
