Koloss begin as terrifying, emotionless blue-skinned giants in The Well of Ascension, their grotesque, rapidly growing bodies and stolen human garments marking them as monstrous shock troops. By The Hero of Ages, their biology is revealed to be even more tragic: they are transformed humans who never stop growing, their skin splitting and their minds enslaved. In The Lost Metal, they reappear as a race capable of controlled transformation into giant forms, suggesting either a new generation of koloss or a fundamental shift in their nature and autonomy.
