Koloss Hemalurgic Spikes begin as the brutal instruments of Ruin’s will, hammered through human hearts to steal Preservation’s power and create monstrous koloss warriors. Over the course of the series their purpose shifts from weapons of domination to tools of reluctant salvation, as the spikes are later understood to be both a curse and a key to humanity’s survival. By the final volume their metaphysical nature is fully revealed: they are fragments of stolen Allomantic and Feruchemical abilities that can be reused, granting new champions the strength needed to challenge a dying god.
