Sum Total enters the Murderbot Diaries as a utilitarian backup support ship in System Collapse, its large-capacity shuttles positioned for mass evacuation. Though introduced late in the series, its role as a mobile refuge underscores the escalating stakes of planetary crises and the crew’s growing need for rapid, large-scale extraction. Its presence signals a shift from individual survival to collective rescue operations, reflecting the series’ thematic expansion from personal autonomy to communal responsibility.
