As the Consu heretics board the Obin ship, the crew discovers their firearms are useless due to a sapper field. Jane and Ran disable the field generator by infiltrating the transport, allowing the security team to fight back effectively. After a brutal confrontation, Jane is gravely wounded while stopping the final heretic from reaching their captive, who continues working on an unknown solution.

Chapter Eleven
Gretchen wakes in a hospital on Unity Colony after nearly dying from her fight with the Consu heretic. Magdy, an old friend now a doctor, reveals she suffered severe injuries including a necrotizing infection, and that Unity mysteriously reappeared in the Karna-Hlaven system after vanishing. She learns the captured Consu—whom she nicknames Kitty—will only speak to her, and it claims to have used a new skip drive to bring them there, while insisting its purpose is to die.

A lone criminal Consu arrives on Phoenix to confirm that diplomat Jana Trujillo holds a mysterious disk that has accepted her as its bearer, then self-immolates after warning her she will be summoned to Phoenix Station. Jana travels there with her father and Obin assistant Ran, where they discuss her father's past colonial ambitions while awaiting the Consu's call. The chapter closes with Ran urging her to finish her drink as a Consu shuttle approaches.
CHAPTER 23
Chapter Twenty-Three
Gretchen is transported alone to the Consu vessel, where she delivers the cobalt disk to Fluffy, a Consu who once knew Kitty. The disk reveals Kitty’s final command: Gretchen is now Kitty’s heir and therefore Consu, obligating her to duel Fluffy to the death over the new skip-drive physics. Fluffy explains that victory grants the winner Kitty’s designs; defeat or forfeiture means death for Gretchen and accelerates the Consu plan to destroy humanity. In Chapter 25, Gretchen Trujillo completes her duel with the Consu Fluffy by using the command module to strand Fluffy and its ship in an uninhabited universe, then returns to Unity Colony with desperately needed supplies. She reveals that the colony must remain permanently cut off from their home universe to prevent the dangerous skip-drive technology from being misused, and unveils a new habitable planet—revealed to be Earth—as their permanent home.
