The Plains of Caduceus emerge in Dark Age as a vast, windswept steppe on Mercury that becomes the decisive theater of the Solar War’s final campaign. Once a neutral expanse of ochre grasslands and buried rail lines, the plains are transformed into a killing field when the Republic launches its lightning strike to seize the planet’s industrial heart. Across the book the terrain shifts from strategic backdrop to active participant: dust storms cloak troop movements, rail depots become fortresses, and the cracked earth itself swallows armies whole. By the novel’s end the plains are both graveyard and proving ground, their name synonymous with the Republic’s most audacious gamble and its gravest losses.
