Morel

- First seen · Book 1 · Ch. 256
Morel has a narrow, sun-baked face and the subdued look of someone accustomed to getting on with small tasks without ceremony. There is a plain, almost endearing steadiness to him, though weariness seems to sit close beneath the surface.

Morel first appears as a short, thin, sunburned French soldier with hollow cheeks, quietly bringing hot water and wine. Later, amid the disorder of the retreat, he is seen in a woman’s cloak and shawl over his cap, his eyes inflamed and streaming as he sings tipsily. The novel gives him no larger personal arc, but his small practical gestures and incongruous, human presence linger amid the soldiers’ hardship.
Description
Morel is described first as short and thin, his sunburned face marked by sunken cheeks and a dull expression. In another appearance he seems sturdier, with inflamed, streaming eyes; a woman’s cloak and a shawl tied around his head over his cap make his outline unmistakable. His bearing is practical and unshowy, though he can appear tipsy and animated when singing.
