A broad, round face peers out beneath the drooping brim of a battered hat, heavy eyelids giving him a permanently drowsy look. Then comes the sharp little gap between his teeth and the steady spit that punctuates his talk—details that make him hard to mistake.

Chel Vanin is a former horse thief whose enormous bulk and sleepy, round face make him seem almost comically unassuming. He appears in camp and on horseback, where he sits like a sack of lard on his long-legged gray mare, talking and spitting with habitual ease. His worn hat, heavy eyelids, and gap between his teeth give him a memorable, unmistakable presence.
Description
Vanin is extremely fat, with a heavy, round build and a round face that looks half asleep beneath drooping, heavy eyelids. A gap between his front teeth shows when he spits, a habitual gesture. He wears a worn hat with a sagging brim, and his bulk nearly hides a three-legged stool when he sits; in the saddle, he slumps like a bag of lard. His general presence is loose and unhurried.
